M> I will allow this transgression since I actually have an answer ;-).
You have my gratitude for your abounding grace ;-)

M> This was one of the 3 reasons for which I moved the hosting of the
M> silverstones.com domain from Force9 to Cheapnet about 2 years ago.
M> Although I liked the Force9 attitude the service had mysterious
M> outages and black holes for which there was never a technical
M> explanation. They were too big to allow the real technicians to talk
M> to the customers. The third (and main) reason, FWIW, is that I paid
M> extra to get an SMTP feed which they finally admitted (after 3 months
M> of sporadic and *lost* mail) they were unable to operate reliably.
This is near enough how I feel about them also. Remember how that Righteous
Brothers song goes?
"You've lost that lovin' feelin' wo oh that lovin' feelin'.."
Seems to be an unfavourable side effect of ISPs/Buisnesses that get "too
big" and then outgrow their customers. Having to speak to someone on
'untechnical support' is not always helpful, especially when they tell you
that everything is fine and that they will pass your information on to a
'technician' to take a look at, which of course never usually happens! It
might make Joe Plonk feel all glowy inside, but beyond that it is no help
whatsoever to the semi-elightened. <-- false humility
M> So - the light I can shed is that it is a known F9 quirk.
It is good to have confirmation of such weird outages. Thanks.
M> Of course, it's nothing whatsoever to do with the fact that F9 name
M> all of their servers after british booze <g>.
Yeah, I also noticed ;) Booze <--> The North. Synonymity? Any chance that F9
are 'serving' to rein'force'the existing stereotype of the 'Northern beer
drinker'? ;) Their other servers - SMTP - are 'rack' and 'ruin'. <g>
M> Aside from those three flaws, I still think F9 are essentially a good
M> ISP.
Well I've been with them near enough from the start. yes, they've always
been fairly reliable (unlike the early days when they were evolving).
However, it may now be time to depart and find other 'hosting grounds'.
Phoned them this morning. Tech said, "..nope, everything's fine here!" I
mailed the chap the header of one of my messages and now he is "...going to
pass it on to a technician to investigate." <g>
Tnanks for reply.
