 Alberto has posted pretty much the best solution.  If your friend is
 using a standard US english keyboard layout, then to type
 e accent egu or �
 you hold alt while typing 0233

 For the rest of the vowels, find a good ASCII table.  This is just
 one reasonable one.

 This method has one benefit in that it will work with any other apps
 like ICQ or forms on webpages.  Note that the French accented letters
 are in the extended ASCII set.  I've never had a problem with this,
 but just be warned.
