 If the first character is not indented, then TB assumes that any >
 within the first 20 characters is indicating a quoted passage, hence
 the colour change.

 Allie Martin had posted an excellent discussion of this back in
 mid-December or so. If you find that message, many features of this
 behaviour come to light.
