Well,  before  you start deleting everything, simply copy the complete
mail directory. Everything.
And  afterwards delete only the account.* files in the mail directory,
NOT in the account directories.

That shouldn't happen, merely the common filters...
But that's why you copy everything before you start deleting stuff.

That wasn't my intention. They're stored in the account.* files in the
account  directories.  (You  know,  the  folders  you shouldn't meddle
with.)
