I don't use IMAP for several reasons. I use POP and yes, this means
that I download all messages and attachments. It goes lightening-fast
with my 10MBps connection. In fact, I feel TB!v5 is a lot faster than
TBv4.

TB! is the best POP client in the world. I've only been using it since
v1.6x (year 1999), so you beat me there. As I said, I don't know
anything about IMAP, so I wouldn't know where TB! ranks.
