I am one of the "others". The problem is not caused by the mail server
in my case.

I just "talked" to the mail server manually three times in rapid
succession using the POP3 protocol without any trouble. The
conversation went something like this (with the replies from the mail
server deleted to make it easier to read):

telnet pop.gmx.de 110 (telnet to the POP server on port 110)
                user ******** (enter my username)
                pass ******** (enter my password)
list (list the messages in my mailbox)
retr 1 (retrieve the first message)
dele 1 (delete the first message)
                quit

        telnet pop.gmx.de 110
                user ********
                pass ********
                list
                quit

        telnet pop.gmx.de 110
                user ********
                pass ********
                list
                quit

I never got an error message indicating any problem with connecting to
the mail server.

TB! ought to send the same commands to the mail server that I sent by
hand. However, somehow the wrong commands must be sent from my computer
to the mail server. This could be a problem with TB! or some other
(operating system?) software that modifies the commands generated by TB!
before they are sent out to the mail server.

Does TB! have a debug option that I could use to look at the commands
that it sends to the mail server?
