The short (and may not be quite accurate, if not entirely
inaccurate) answer: it's a security standard allowing users to
encrypt and/or sign (authenticate) their email. It's similar to PGP,
but different.
As a new user of S/MIME myself, a comprehensive answer is beyond me.
Perhaps some security gurus could shed some light.
