Greetings, my name is Steve and I am a totally blind computer user who
accesses both Win 98 and NT with the use of a speech synthesizer and
special "screen-reading" software. Yesterday, I decided that The Bat!
is something which I definitely should try. I do, however, have a few
initial questions which I'm hoping someone on this list might be able to
assist me with.

First and foremost, does there exist a user manual for the Bat? I am
aware of the help file, but was hoping that a manual of sorts might
exist somewhere, preferably in ASCII, but HTML or PDF would be fine.

This next question might seem a bit odd as it probably wouldn't have any
effect on anyone who isn't using screen-reading software. When
screen-reading software encounters an object, it makes a determination
on how to treat that object based partially uppon its windows
classification. For example, standard windows objects are often
classified as list boxes, dialog boxes, edit fields, tree views,
property sheets, etc... When I open The Bat!, my screen-reading
software has a hard time determining the classifications of the preview
pain, folder list and message lists. Subsequently, if I arrow up and
down through my various messages, the software isn't sure what it should
speak e.g. subject, sender, etc... Interestingly enough, if I tab into
the actual message itself, or the folder list, my software is able to
read the line with the cursor, or the line which is highlighted. OK,
with all that confusing information, here is the question; is there a
reason why The Bat! does not seem to adhere to standard windows
classifications? More importantly, can anyone think of why the message
list might appear to the screen reader to be different than the text of
the message itself, and the folder list i.e. is it perhaps in a
different color, is the cursor a different shape, do the lines get
highlighted differently, etc...?

I will undoubtedly have more questions as I progress with THe Bat! From
what I've seen thus far, it would seem to be a fantastic and absolutely
amazing program. I really appreciate any info/suggestions/questions,
etc...

Thanks in advance,

Steve
