Welcome to the list and the program. As you may have heard, this
list depends on users supporting other users.

Well, you will find no argument that the help files *need* to be
improved. One of the limitations is that the development team is
small (3 people), and English is not their native tongue. As such
they rely on volunteers to keep everything up to date. This isn't
the most effective way to get updated files, but that's the way it is
for now. So your best bet is to look at the FAQ and ask here.
Hopefully any questions can be resolved this way.

There is a lot of functionality in this little program. Hopefully
going small steps at a time will ease the transition.

There are two options you should consider. First, to answer your
question, there are Colour groups that can be defined and applied to
any messages in a given account. Go to
Options -> Message List Colours
You can then define your colours and give them appropriate names.
These colour groups affect the appearance of the message in the
message list. You can apply colour groups to a message through
filters or by right clicking on the message in the message list and
selecting "Colour Group".
The second option you should consider is to create a folder
specifically for helpful messages. In this manner, it would be even
easier to get quick access to your reference messages. In combination
with colour groups, you could make it extremely easy to find
appropriate information quickly.
Also, if you haven't done so already, consider creating a folder
specifically for TBUDL messages. You can then define a filter to
automatically move any incoming messages from this list into that
folder. This may or may not be appropriate for your situation. I
have found it especially valuable when the list traffic gets very
heavy.
