Hi

This query may bore you all to death, but it mystifies me, so here
goes:

A few months ago I had problems with my ISP's SMTP server, it kept
refusing to send messages, throwing back the error: "Syntactically
invalid HELO argument(s)". At the time I managed to solve the problem,
which is normally to do with network settings.

Last week I bought a new computer (always a bad idea). Everything
worked fine....apart from The Bat! It would receive mail fine, but
sending brought up the above error again. Curiously though, I could
send with other clients (I tried Poco and OE, and both worked fine).

Then I investigated the usual suspects. First I changed the SMTP
server and used my office server instead. Suddenly The Bat was fine.

Then I changed back to my 'faulty' home ISP server (BT Internet) and
investigated the network settings, and changed from my ISP's advised
settings in the DNS configuration for the host and domain (actual IP
addresses) to localhost. Suddenly The Bat! sends fine.....except some
servers at the receiving end were now throwing my mails back. But
again, the other clients worked fine.....

So it is purely a clash between BT Internet's SMTP server, and The
Bat! Unfortunately, that's my main email client and my main ISP. And I
really don't want to use my work SMTP server for personal mail. And my
ISP can't begin to suggest an answer. And I don't want to give up The
Bat! just because of this silly problem. And I don't really understand
networks at all. Bored yet? I'll make it even more complicated.

It's only a problem when I send mail via ADSL (I'm on BT's ADSL trial,
which is ethernet-based). If I dial in to their server on an ordinary
modem, The Bat! sends mail without a hitch.

If you've managed to get to the end, thank you. Any ideas gratefully
received.

John Killeen
