Hi David,
On 13 October 2000 at 22:22:58 GMT -0500 (which was 04:22 where I
live) David Robert Austen wrote and made these points on the subject
of "Kill Dupes - and what else possibly?":
I am replying to you because you have replied to me! Please try to use
"new message" to start a new thread or, if you must reply, then please
edit out the "Follow-up" information from the header.
DRA> I am occasionally astounded to see the number of duplicate messages
DRA> that are reported deleted when I order "Kill Dupes."
DRA> Is there more going on here than I think?
There is not.
DRA> Are there situations e.g. where a like-named message is killed
DRA> when it is in fact a different message within the same thread?
This doesn't happen.
DRA> I guess the bottom line is this: what kind of comparison checking
DRA> is done to ensure that only true dupes are killed?
A comparison of the Message-ID header values is done. This message ID
is generated afresh for every message and is built from the
originating domain and a large random(ish) number. These should be
absolutely unique per message. The chances of this being accidentally
identical for two messages is remote in the extreme. Your message, for
instance, had the ID [EMAIL PROTECTED] This is
the same ID that is used for threading by Reference. How often is that
wrong when TB is the only message source and the headers are intact?
DRA> Can we modify this?
Why would we want to?
DRA> Everybody out there feeling really confident in this default
DRA> technique?
Completely - 100%.
DRA> Still feeling astounded,
Calm yourself - all is well ;-).
