You can check whether they are really deleted by going into the
suspected folders and clicking on Folder / Browse Deleted Messages.

On Folder / Properties, check On exit: Compress folder. That should do
the trick.

Don't forget Outbox. It was the biggest offender over here, as I had
never thought of compressing it.
