This should have been, You need to do this for all folders *that you
want to use default column settings*.

That makes sense.

Sure. But you can use default for your most common type, and leave
the rest of the folders as manual column settings.

I think I know what you mean. You want to define an arbitrary number
of column groups. Then each folder would be assigned a particular
column group. Any changes to that column grouping would be propagated
to all folders using it, sort of like colour groups, right?
Unfortunately, this is not possible at the moment. The only setting
that can be shared the the default setting.
