How bizarre. Not what I (or anyone else here AFAIK) sees at all. Of
course, I thread by Reference, not by Subject. Even when I switch to
Descending date order (I usually choose ascending) I don't see what
you describe.

I've never had this happen.

This doesn't happen either. I just tried it - using the trashcan icon
to remove a message from a thread. The next message showed up. Hang on
- - that was folder view. Nope. No different in the main preview window.

Indeed ... and that's just what I get here. I don't know what you're
doing, but it doesn't match with my experience.

Well, not for you, but it seems to work just fine for most. I don't
understand why that might be. What OS do you run under?
