I've done a little testing, and.....

I worked this one out - if it's a message sent in HTML format, the message
flag doesn't appear until you click on it. If it's a plain text message, it
appears as soon as the message arrives.

Still no answer to this - I tried every type of encoding available, and it
always showed the tabs. I'll check out the program used to email those odd
ones when I get another one (it only happens occassionally - most times it
shows the tabs).
