Hmmm. My TB is currently using up 7,868KB, true. Considering that I
have 128MB, I don't think that's much, though. I have no idea about
Outlook and how it would compare.

Hold that ... I just shut TB down and then restarted it, after
downloading v1.49. The memory footprint is now 3,584KB.

I thread by reference but some break, if the headers are not RFC
conform.

However, you are aware that you can use View / View threads bBy and
View / sort By at the same time, can't you? This way you can sort
chronologically or in reversed order, as you wish.
