Hello Martin Posch from Austria & others on TBUDL following this
thread,

Sunday, January 14, 2001, you asked why I stated:

>I am a Calypso refugee myself.

MP> Why?

I evaluated and registered Calypso v 3.0 during May of 1999. I liked
some of it's features a lot, while others such as the mono-lingual
and really bad (even in English) spell checker and the sequential
account downloads. TB!s editor is so far above Calypso's, I can't
imagine going back to it (just take the trouble to learn TB!'s
commands). OTOH, I wish TB! would implement the ability to edit
incoming messages in a more direct manner.

I particularly liked Calypso's multiple signatures and single inbox
w/ account column features, but I used only 4 accounts then and did
no filtering. It is also easier to download mail from a specific
single account among others w/ Calypso (& even Outlook express for
that matter) than it is w/ TB!, since my account tree and folder
directory system is longer than a python.

TB!'s spell checkers are adequate to good in both English and
Spanish and I can download mail from 17 accounts at once over 2-3
minutes.

I changed locations and was off lines for a few months. While
waiting for the phone co. to install a telephone line I'd paid for,
I downloaded Calypso at a cyber-cafe and then downloaded 5 mb of
mail from just one account.

The version downloaded was v 3.01, a minor upgrade that
never-the-less involved a change in file formats, so the 5 mb
couldn't be viewed w/o upgrading my v. 3.0. Somehow that blew up
Calypso. It just wouldn't open a mailbox. I would crash.

Uninstalling, reinstalling, returning to v. 3.0 - NOTHING helped;
particularly not Calypso Tech Support, who clearly knew still less
than I regarding what had happened or how to proceed and could care
much, much less.

Aside from the 5 mb I'd downloaded, I had 50mb of Calypso encrypted
email I couldn't access via any means but once again Calypso Tech
Support couldn't have been less concerned. It was my operating
system, they said (the same one I'm using now a year and a half
later), and insisted I install every windows upgrade present on the
M$ website, many of which have nothing to do with the internet or
anything else remotely related to Calypso. I was affected by and
stuck with their abysmal ignorance. They did export the 5 mb file
for me, but took a week to do it (a fellow TBUDL friend took less
than 24 hr. to do the same).

Not only is Calypso's Tech Support worse than useless (they're also
supercilious, condescending, uninformed and offensive redneck
sob's); and Calypso's user discussion list is a joke. 1 irrelevant
inconsequential post a month is a lot there.

In short, Calypso is for those in need of little more than a glitzy
GUI. Technologically it's far inferior to TB! and in any case, not
only is MCSDallas incompetent, they are not to be trusted.

MP> In Detail: At the moment I am using Calypso, TheBat! and Eudora.
MP> In fact I am satisfied with all programs, each has its
MP> specialities.

MP> What did you finally conince of TheBat!.

Both the product and the people are dependable. The Bat! has true
depth, and both those who use it and those who stand behind it are
not going to quit on you. These are people who WILL get to the
bottom of any issue, who WILL do whatever it takes to support you
when you need it.

A lot of thought has gone into designing the TB! paradigm, which is
unique among email clients and I find it very intuitive. I can
follow the logic w/o much guesswork. My 3 acnet.net accounts have
been getting a lot of spam so I just made a spam filter that
filtered all the junk mail to the trash folder w/ no problems. Sure,
the product is still perfectible (but what isn't)?

MP> Maybe there are some reasons I have not thought of yet.

I tried those and many others also. Eudora does what IT want's
rather than what I want, I find it less than intuitive and it
crashes on me. Pegasus is free but wasn't an agile solution and
proved erratic for me. Foxmail is a good little freebie and some
have talked well of Poco (though buggy) and Becky, which I haven't
tried.

TB! is as competent and comprehensive as is going o be found, but
more than that it is a way of life. Both the development / support
staff and TBUDL as a cohesive group are top notch (no ignorant
supercilious, condescending, and offensive redneck will give you the
run around here). With TB! you get really knowledgeable and
civilized attention that gets to the heart and roots of your problem,
inside and out. You couldn't find a better or more competent
community of users and developers.

MP> Because of a change in my job I am awaiting a large amount of
MP> Email the next years so I want to make the decision for an
MP> Email-program for that time. So i am asking the professionals in
MP> this list, what reasons should be considered when I have to
MP> decide between the programs mentioned before.

MP> There is for instance one feature of Calypso/Eudora(also
MP> Pegasus): I can copy one directory (with calypso one file) form
MP> my notebook to my DesktopPc and have my complete Mail-
MP> Program-Setup copied. With TheBat! I always had to fiddle with
MP> registry-Entries.

TB! is more configurable, more powerful but it could use a few
features that would pride greater ease of use.

It needs more global management features (covering all accounts) for
the ticker, for filters and for downloading, thus avoiding having to
search through the whole expanded tree a for given account in order
to deal with it's properties. It should be possible to make global
filters, also.

MP> Sometimes I have to Compose a HTML-message, which is also a
MP> Problem with TheBat!

I can see using html for underlining passages a message received,
but the truth is that it's use in email is an abomination for which
I sometimes feel that reactivating firing squads would be
appropriate. So if I really want to underscore something I'll paste
it into a word processor. (I also do the opposite: I transfer text
from WP's to TB!'s editor for quick spell checking or organizing
&/or copying things in columns, and later paste them back.

MP> I am waiting for opinions

Now you've heard mine.

Douglas
