Hi Ming-Li,

On 16 January 2001 at 08:56:10 -0800 (which was 16:56 where I live)
Ming-Li wrote and made these points:

And your contribution is always welcome, especially since you are
addressing an issue which is on my mind right now.

ML> ... Where should I post? Is this too advanced (tech-oriented) or
ML> not? Should TBUDL no longer discuss anything about RegEx? Or
ML> Windows registry? Suddenly the lines between OT/non-OT and
ML> beta/non-beta couldn't be clearer.

You're quite right. It will be a matter of definition to start with.
I will attempt to lay down some guidelines. I'd also like to
simplify the list rules and post them up on the FAQ site. I'd also
like to keep my three work projects moving and put in a wish for
world peace and an end to famine. Of this list of things, I will do
what I can as well as I can :-).

ML> Most Q&As/discussions start humbly and grow along the way, IMHO.

True.

ML> To a point, the discussion is out of my league and I give up on
ML> it, unless it really concerns me. Thank God I'm not a moderator,
ML> who has to read everything. ;-)

Nevertheless, you are making a valuable contribution.

ML> The tipping point where one stops following a thread, however,
ML> has to differ from one reader to another.

Also true.

ML> To some, RegEx itself is a techie topic; to others (Marck and
ML> Januk sprint to mind), not even a multi-line RegEx appears
ML> daunting.

Both Januk and I have agreed (off-list) that RegExp programming is a
techie subject, not for the faint-hearted. So that's one delineation
point that is quite clear.

ML> ... Sometimes (let's hope it's not often) we'll have to spend
ML> time arguing whether to move a discussion to TBTECH or vice
ML> versa.

... I don't think it will be a matter for argument. A moderator is
more likely to jump in with a "Please take this thread to TBTECH".
Threads are not going to jump the other way as often.

ML> I'm even tempted to argue that most new users would eventually
ML> follow a question to TBTECH if they want the final answer.

... or monitor it in the archive. (That reminds me .. Syafril ..
will we be adding the new list to the list-archive? I don't know how
to do that).

ML> In fact, the only people I think would benefit from the split
ML> are those who want only advanced discussions and stay only in
ML> TBTECH.

It is my belief that, if I get the doctrine right, the real
beneficiaries should be the beginners and TBUDL members with less
technically demanding issues.

ML> That being said, let me reiterate that I believe the problems to
ML> be addressed are real, and I'm sorry I have nothing but
ML> skepticism to offer in this post. I wish I had something more
ML> constructive to write,

Just by asking the questions and raising the issues you are bringing
to light ways of looking at things that may not have been obvious. I
consider that of great use and a service so, thank you!

ML> but well, sometimes one has to admit he's not smart enough.

Ming-Li? Not smart enough? That'll be the day! ;-)
