You understood. This is what I thought the filter did.

This is what I missed.
I have several accounts with many nested folders. I undoubtedly
created some filters and failed to manually re-filter existing read
messages. It seems that setting read messages to unread and then
changing focus won't activate read filters either. Not that it's a
problem, just an observation.
