You are a "member" of GMX? That is you have a User-ID, a password and
their confirmation mail?

SMTP server is OK. Try to check "Use same settings as for mail
retrieval". And check "Require secure ...". Uncheck "POP3 before
SMTP".

Go to the web site of GMX and have a look at your settings there. It
wasn't necessary for me, but others said that you have to set the
preferences their, too. Maybe this goes especially for new users (I am
a GMX customer for more than two years now).

Except for some days around Christmas and the beginning of this year,
when maintenance and DoS attacks brought down the service, they are
very reliable, fast and have very good spam/malware filters. They
don't filter out everything but very seldom I get spam or viruses.

Their privacy policy is strict and was just tested "good" by the
official German testing lab *Stiftung Warentest". They don't sell
customer data. You only get a newsletter once a week with some
advertising in it (don't know if you will get an English one). When
you use the web interface - which is not very good - you will get
tailor-made advertising according to your profile you had to enter. Be
aware that they frequently test the consistence of such data; if they
find inconsistencies, like non-existing street addresses, they will
ask you to update the profile, otherwise they will delete your
account.

GMX is a Munich, Germany based company with - as it looks - a very
good business scheme. They are around for about 3 years, IIAC, and do
perform steadily upwards. They haven't subscribed to the American
business model of "get-rich-quick-on-line" with quarterly results but
do business the old-fashioned (a bit like Amazon: long-term plans are
more worthy than short-term revenues).

In my opinion they will last, the already do last longer than 90% of
Internet businesses. To get this into perspective, for some years now
I have three Internet companies of which I consistently say they will
last: Amazon, Yahoo and GMX - until now I have been right.

Oh, until I got me my own domain GMX was my main POP/SMTP service. It
now is my second for importance and still my first for volume (the
four TB! lists I am subscribed to go through GMX).

Hope that helps.
