When GMX introduced SMTP authentication (RFC 2554) they made this method
of authentication the default for new users. For long time users it
remained SMTP-after-POP, *but* it also works with authentication from
TB! (or any other MUA, if there are any ;-), even if the server side
setting is SMTP-after-POP. Fortunately not the other way round.

One can think of it as some kind of priority system: They have several
ways to determine if a sender has a right to use their servers. The most
unsecure is "SMTP-after-POP". A bit more secure is "SMTP-after-POP with
IP check". And the most secure way is authentication via RFC 2554. You
can always use a better authentication method than the server expects
you to, but never a less secure one.

Well, to be honest, I don't remember how long I've been a GMX user now.
:-) I just had a look into my archives and I found a message using my
GMX address from June 1998. I use GMX as my primary mail address. GMX
has been quite reliable over all those years. OK, there were times when
the service was down, mostly because they were overwhelmed by the fast
growing number of users. But nevertheless I really think they are doing
a great job.
