This wouldn't be making TB! more like Outlook (Express) since TB! is
the only client that I'm familiar with that uses numbered subject
reply prefixing. I know a lot of e-mail clients.

The 'standard' reply prefix is 'Re:'. Some clients use variations of
this such as 'RE'. This is what leads to multiple Re:'s. TB! is adding
to the problem since most other clients will not recognise 'Re(3):' as
a quote prefix and simply treat it as a part of the subject and not
delete it. The reply will therefore chain as you so dislike it.

I wouldn't say it makes it premier unless you're corresponding only
with other TB! users, a minority user-base (unfortunately). The
function gets in the way with clients that don't support which is
pretty much most other clients out there including the mainstream
ones.
Message threading is great though.
