A workaround: use a dash:
  Smith - Work
  Smith - Home
or
  Smith - Work -
  Smith - Home -

I would suggest not to put "- Work/Home -" as the last name, but just
as display name.

Example:
      First name: John
     Middle name: <empty>
       Last name: Smith
Display name as: John Smith - Home -
etc.

The above works with autocomplete.

I didn't try backup/restore though...

There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers
exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will
instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more
bizarre and inexplicable.

There's another which states that this has already happened.
