Uncheck "[ ] Check mail at startup" in all accounts under Account /
Properties / Options.

Leave the "Check amil every xxx minutes" under Account / Properties /
Options as is.

Ensure that there is no setting, not even a tickmark, under Account /
Properties / Network.

Then go to the main menu and find Options / Network & Admin.

Set up your DUN/RAS details here. Tick the fields "[X] No automatic
dial" and "[X] Use existing connection (if any)".

This way, TB will check only if connected; it will connect only if you
hit F2 or alt-F2 but not try to check (and thus produce an error
message) if you are not connected.
