A new account was set up and I had its mail directory point to the CDROM drive. This gives me access to the messages. The Bat! complained when I (inadvertly) tried to change some attributes, but that is logical. Also, starting The Bat! with the CDROM not its drive, results in a number of error messages (no access to sent, inbox, outbox). I guess I can find some workarounds but it is a not so elegant solution.
