It's a workaround, and I could probably come up with others, too. I

I don't know how they actually implemented it. Actually, I would think
each colour code is one object, and a paramater/flag in the index
file, at the index item for this message, points to that object. If
so, it could be set from the editor by way of menu item as easily as a
filter can set it. I fail to see what you mean, maybe I am not
thinking complicated enough. ;-)

However, we both cannot answer this question, we can only speculate
how the colour coding scheme is implemented "behind the scenes". If
you can get inside knowledge, I'd be interested to discuss this
further, by PM or on TBOT (or need I subscribe to TBTECH?).
