Say, you use Reader 3.x supporting PDF 1.2 and the file is PDF 1.3 or later. this could be especially problematic with PDF 1.4 and a Reader before 5.0, as PDF 1.4 includes some features Acrobat Reader before 5.0 cannot work with (i.e. 128bit encoding). The second idea is that your friend's programme is not totally compatible (but I don't think so). The third idea: You really are out of luck, and every time the file is sent, it is corrupted on the way.
