Serge, thanks for the comments.  I had to do three procedures.  One
was to completely uninstall and then reinstall all Palm-related
software. Another was to copy some data files from a Ghost image of my
disk into the appropriate directory, because they became lost during
the uninstall/directory deleting operation.  The third was to hard
reset my Palm.

I have no clue to what could have caused the problem.  All interim
changes were rolled back.  I assume it was some electronic file
corruption, but I just don't know.

It turns out that, other than wasting my evening, there is a silver
lining.  I chose to try out a new conduit for my calendar, phones,
etc., and it works much better than the one I had set up before. (This
new conduit was the reason I had to reset the Palm.)
