CTRL+Alt+Right will take you through the unread messages from the top
of the list to the bottom of the list. If you're in threaded mode, it
will move from thread to thread moving down the list from where you
started. If there are multiple messages within a thread it will open
the thread and move through the messages within the thread in a
descending fashion as well. When finished with a folder, you're
automatically taken to the first unread message in the next folder,
starting from the top of the list and working downwards.

With this in mind, you can sort the messages accordingly.

I sort by received time and in descending order. I have no problems
whatsoever with appropriately being moved to the next unread message
using the shortcut CTRL+Alt+right arrow or CTRL+].
