I guess you missed the very recent thread about ZoneAlarm?

It could very well be the source of your problems with TB! connecting
to the server. Unfortunately, the only way to confirm this is to
uninstall ZoneAlarm. Simply disabling it is not enough.

This is the exact type of sneaky thing it will do and what it did to
me. I spent a long time blaming Win2k for the problems I was having
and many have ranted on this list, blaming TB! for the problems
connecting. Admittedly, TB! is sensitive to ZA's problems when ZA is
problematic to your system, so it's usually one of the first apps to
start giving problems.

I may be barking up the wrong tree but somehow I very much doubt this.
