Thats right, because they are both unread. So what you want is unread but old? I guess this is only a problem in lists with treaded view. All others can be sorted on time/date. I am sorry there is no solution for that similar to the one you mentioned. The only thing you could do is mark all msg after a certain period read and flag them.
