Ah - the Help file says that Shift+Ctrl+* opens all the threads - which
is where the problem with the laptop may lie.

Not here they don't. Ctrl+ and Ctrl* have no effect in the main window -
only in the message list.

I would if I could, but I haven't yet found the way to do it.

I can now expand threads in the message window, but not in the main
window.

What is the point of the blue arrow icons in the main window toolbar if
they only go between thread starts? They are called 'next' and
'previous', but I am unable to make them read through a thread. Even
though the thread may be expanded in the message list, I can't seem to
expand it in the main window and the 'next' button goes to the next
thread.

Perhaps it would help if someone could tell me what spacebar and the
arrow icons are actually supposed to do? Are they configureable?

A three button key press (Ctrl-Alt-Right arrow) is not an option for me
to read through my mail - neither is not using threading. My current mail
reader (Pluto on RISC OS) allows me to click on an icon to quickly go
through unread mail in threads. Agent lets me use the space bar to do a
similar thing with news on the PC.
