For exactly the situation you described I _do_ use 'Mail ticker' :-)
Put to the very upper right corner and scaled in size so it does not affect
my 'usual work' it notifies me if there are 'real important' new mails, as
'Mail ticker' is capable to be set up and turn on or off on per folder
basis. So in ML-folders new arriving e-mails are not announced on ticker,
while on several other it's activated :-)
This whole stuff therefore equals a '2-level-notification':
1.) There is unread mail in general (whatever it belongs to) (flapping Bat :-))
2.) There is unread mail you should better have a look at soon (Mail
ticker, really seldom shown because of good filtering *G*)
