I, like Peter, use the mail ticker to indicate to me when messages
that I wish to read sooner than later have come in. I dislike the
ticker sprawling across the screen and I don't really wish to read any
of it's content either, so I set it to thin view, use a small font,
and disable autozoom. I then make it as thin as possible which reduces
it to a small bar in the left lower corner of my screen.

If you configure the ticker in the same way and still prefer your
solution because you dislike the ticker which is quite inconspicuous
as I have mine, then it's really odd.

The 'I dislike the ticker' statements followed by the description of
awkward work-arounds to problems that the ticker would *much* better
handle is a mystery to me, especially since the ticker doesn't have to
be conspicuous and in the way.
