I wouldn't go as far as you describe - always being a fan of parenthesis (e.g. for clarity's sake). One big advantage of certain characteristics often called "bad style" (parenthesis, abbrevs etc.) is that they can be much clearer. Oh, and they are often essential to irony and satire, not the main points of German literature. BTW, I gather you've been given higher education in your hometown. Which school did you go to? > I have gone to use parenthesis and even the odd *astrisks* to enhance > meanings in emails (keyword: civilisation in decline), but not in > important letters. Well, asterisks are an alternative to italics (like underlining was in olden days for manuscripts) and therefore necessary. They are not a symptom of a declining civilisation; ever read Chamberlain, not the Prime minister, the author? -- Dierk Haasis http://www.Write4U.de http://Interest.Write4U.de/pongo PGP keys available: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?Subject=SendMyPGPkeys The Bat 1.61 on Windows 95 4.0 1212 C The great tragedy of science: The slaying of a beautiful hypothesis by an ugly fact.
