Part of my professional field is testing software firewall protection in workstation and desktop environments. I also test those within the server realm but for the scope of this thread I will remain with the workstation/desktop scenario. Under basic testing ALL personal/desktop software firewall solutions have been observed casing issues related to LAN/WAN connectivity and speed, problems with some other applications when coding and memory allocation conflicts arise and a host of other technical problems. The issue is what may work for you may not for another, based on networking issues, software/application issues and believe it or not, hardware/peripheral issues. All freeware/shareware personal firewalls provide adequate protection and stability based on performance. All do NOT run flawlessly on every system based on installed hardware, software or operating system. IMPO a home/SOHO user should test each for a determined length of time, gauge performance and application conflict issues and settle on the firewall solution that 1] offers the highest degree of stability and 2] offers them confidence that the firewall solution is performing it's mission.
