Aside from OnTrack (who supplies the installation disks that come w/ many if not most hard drives purchased separately), among the people who have hard disk control down pat are PowerQuest (PartitionMagic & other utilities) www.powerquest.com and relatively recently I found two other firms that offer similar applications: Paragon and Acronis. http://www.paragon.ru/n_frame.htm and http://www.acronis.com I am using the Acronis OS Selector and Disk Administrator which has functions similar to PartitionMagic's. I've used it to partition, as well as resize and move partitions and change partitions from one file system format to another, with data and all already installed on the drives. It's worked well for those tasks, but didn't recognize a version of XP Home that I had installed on another hard drive that is there as a slave. So I can't recommend it as a boot manager (until I get that detail resolved after installing another OS like Linux when I have a little more time) but there are a lot of things there that might be useful and the people I dealt with were quite helpful and pleasant to deal with. Take a look at all three sites and you just might find what you're looking for on any or all of them. I'm sure you won't be afraid to use a program from the ex-Soviet Union (Paragon is in St. Petersburg). I was already trying out the Acronis OS Selector when I ran into that one, but what I saw on the website looked very complete. If you need any info regarding the Acronis OS Selector I can check on it's functions for you, since I have a fully functional copy. For instance: I could make a NTFS partition and try to change it to FAT32. Would that help? Acronis also offers something called "Acronis Recovery Expert" for $29.95 but you might need to have it installed before your problem occurs. � Automatically recover ANY partition with ANY file system, including Windows FAT and NTFS, Linux Ext2, Ext3, ReiserFS, Linux SWAP, HPFS, and many more Anyway, there are more options out there than Norton, LookOut Express and Eudora.
