Whenever anything like this happens to me I go scurrying off looking
round the AB for an alternative entry for the address that isn't
behaving as expected.

Although logic may say "I chose this group for the mass mail so the
address has to come from there" that's not how the %ABtoxxxx macro
sees it. It just finds the first match for the address in the *whole*
address book and goes with what it stumbles on first.
