No, I don't think there is any setting to expand any or all threads
when you open a folder view. I always read all emails with all threads
expanded, so when I open the folder view window, my first action is to
hit crtl-*. TB should remember the setting of whether one wishes to
view threads expanded or collapsed, very much like it remembers
your View settings. This has been in the wishlist for  a while.

Once we have this functionality, we can discuss about conditional
expansion of threads.

However, would not wish TB to explode anything. ;-)
