PGP uses the -- as a start of it's delimiters to match things, such as
- ----- begin signature ---- etc.  If PGP comes across a signature
delimiter in an email, it needs to break it so it doesn't try using
that as a break point when reading it on the other side.  There is a
QT on the FAQ website that handles the - -- signature, along with a
couple of other ones.
