If you can see the plug-in in:
 Options -> Virus protection
you've installed it properly.

When I test my AV-settings, I send a message to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] with in the message body:

send av-mail-test-a 1-8

What it does is sending you some mails with eicar test virus. It's a
harmless code that's recognized by all virus scanners. The virus is
differently coded in each message. (uuencoded, mime encoded, a zipped
mime, etc)
AVG finds them all on my system, though I'm using the AVG plug-in for
Mailtraq, my mail server, so that the AVG plug-in for TB never gets
anything. As long as I'm using AVG it's never failed me.
