Well, I've tried all the great suggestions given and nothing has resolved the issue, although I still have yet to find updated video drivers, which I'll do momentarily.
Actually I'm quite disappointed as I thought I had found a great email client for an older computer... maybe mine is just too old! I did discover that it only occurs in plain text mode, which the composer only uses.
