See "Account Files and Directories" in the help file.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong. Account | Properties (Ctl + Shft +
P) | File & Directories | Keep attachment files, then select "Separately
in a separate directory."

Please note the help files states you can't change the message base to
another directory when files are stored separately.

Separate storage sounds like the way to go.
