I think it is probably totally relevant here - a large uncompressed
folder will take ages to process each time a new message is added to
the list. Goto Folder / Compress All Folders and see how much space is
recovered on your HD plus how much faster everything goes < lol >

Exactly - enabling compression on exit does the trick neatly and once
you've done the initial compress you hardly notice the time delay in
closing down TB! :-)
