If you toggle on auto-format and go back to add more words among the
previously wrapped lines, the text will be re-wrapped as you type,
*with* the double spaces separating sentences preserved. I just tried
and confirmed that it's still true. You don't have to use Alt-L when
working in auto-format mode. The shortcoming of auto-format mode is that
it will not
allow you to prematurely
end lines in this way.
It will force a reflow. So if you wish to do things like this, then
toggle off auto-format while doing so, or separate the short lines with
an empty line

like this.
