You're getting "winmail.dat" because the sender isn't using plain text. IIRC, by default Outlook uses HTML or, if Word is installed, RFT. Winmail.dat is the formatted version of the message. To avoid the bloat, your friend needs to configure Outlook to send plain text and not to use Wordmail (that's two settings). How you do that depends on the version of Outlook your friend is using.
