Hello Michael & other TB! list members following this thread,

On Saturday, November 1, 2003, Michael responded to Jonathan Angliss
thusly:

>> As a small note, your email appears to be missing a signature
>> delimiter, or cut mark. This mark (shown just above my name) is
>> in the format of [dash][dash][space][enter] ("-- "). This allows
>> TB to automagically strip any data from below it, such as the

>> decide to put in your emails.

MSG> I've never heard of the signature delimiter you describe above.
MSG> Is this a custom or requirement for The Bat mailing list? After
MSG> I read your email, I checked other mail from TB, and much of it
MSG> does indeed seem to have the delimiter you mention. But I don't
MSG> find it used in any of the other three business-related lists I
MSG> belong to.

Pegasus (and maybe Eudora) also uses the same signature delimiter, I
believe.

MSG> ... it seems inappropriate, to me, to put the double dash
MSG> *before* my name because then it separates my name from what
MSG> I've written, and that interrupts the flow of the
MSG> correspondence.

1).- It's hardly noticeable.

2).- It doesn't take effect until someone else answers one of your
posts. At that point, it's THEIR message, not yours, and why
should a message of THEIRS contain YOUR signature? IOW, if I
was answering a message of yours that DIDN'T have signature
delimiter, I'd had to remove it manually. (I bet you weren't
     thinking in those terms).

3).- If you really want to remove it, the signature delimiter is
contained by default in the templates. All you have to do is
erase it. (Be forewarned though that on the TB! lists, you're
likely to get asked to use it, for the reason I described
above). It doesn't come into play when READING a message you
sent, it takes effect when ANSWERING it.

If you like, you could put it just AFTER your name (which I'd
still have to erase when replying), but before the rest of the
things that often appear, like your professional status,
personal contact data, what kind of equipment, operating system
and service packs you're using, a PGP code, cookies, the
headers of your mail service or the mailing list, etc. etc.

It's just another nice touch you're free to use if desired.
