Hello, If I read all the messages in a thread, and one new message arrives, the entire thread is marked unread. Then, if I can recognize/remember what has happened, if I read just the new message, then the entire thread is marked read again. However, I don't always remember what messages I've read (which is what the 'read' flag is for).
