I to have a very old Yahoo! account (1998 or earlier) yet do not have
access to POP/SMTP access. However I can't remember ever having access to
these services. I use Clara.net now for my email service, very good
IMO.

Yahoopops works great. For those using Hotmail you might want to try
Hotmail Popper from http://www.fitsoftware.com/ it is freeware.
