Hi all,

Well last night I decided I would install the copy of Outlook 2003 I
got with my PocketPC. I'm not really sure why I decided to I just
did.

After a fight with several programs I found a [free and very easy]
way to import my mail from The Bat! To Outlook while keeping the full
folder structure.

For those who might be interested here is how I did it...

1. Created a folder on my desktop called "TBMAIL" and mirror my
folder setup in TB! in this folder. This was the longest task however
as I have a very simple folder layout (why have a complex one with
such a powerful search system in TB! ?) it was pretty easy to do. For
those interested in how I store my mail I will put a little bit of
info about it at the bottom of this post.

2. I then went into each folder in TB! and selected all of the mail
in the folder (Ctrl+A) then selected Tools -> Export Messages ->
Message Files (.EML) and selected the appropriate folder to export
them to. I did this for each folder including Sent Items, Trash, etc.

3. Loaded Outlook Express and again created the folder structure in
there (again this was annoying but not awful as I have a simple
folder setup.

4. I then selected all of the mail in each folder in Explorer and
just dragged them into the appropriate folder in Outlook Express.
They automatically import keeping all of the correct settings (date,
etc.). I did this for each folder.

5. Loaded Outlook 2003 and selected to import mail fom Outlook
Express and everything was imported without a single lost mail :)

If you have a lot of folders this will take a while. As I have said
already my folder setup was very simple. All I do is have a root
folder for each year and then sub-folders for each month (January,
February, etc.). Then if an email arrives in September I just move it
to the September folder. Pretty simple and very, very, very easy and
fast to find what I am looking for. I use colour groups to label
email however I never used it all that much so not having this option
in Outlook should not be an issue (for me at least).

The only issue I have found with Outlook 2003 is that I can't order
the folders how I want. It automatically sorts them alphabetically
which is a little annoying but easy to get around by putting the
month's number from 01 to 12 at the start.

So I have managed to successfully migrate from TB! to Outlook 2003! I
hope anyone else planning on doing the same has such an easy job as I
did. In all it took me 7 minutes to create all the folders and import
the e-mail into Outlook Express and then Outlook 2003. As I said if
you have a very complex folder setup it will take longer but it isn't
an impossible task and it shouldn't take you more than an hour no
matter how complex your setup is.

Hope this post helps some people. I know I said I was going to stick
with TB! But I thought why spend money when I have Outlook 2003 just
sitting there? Also I like the way I can sync my e-mail with my
PocketPC now rather than have to download them in Pocket Outlook as
well as TB! and then using the mail on server feature to remove the
messages manually.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me directly.

Thanks to all on this DL for all of the help you have given me while
I have been a member of TBUDL which has been a long time even though
I have been on and off the DL a few times.

Cheers and all the best in the future to Ritlabs. I hope that in the
future I will use TB! again, perhaps at version 4 (so September 2005
yeah ;) )
